On February 2, 2022 the Council of Europe Development Bank (CEB) launched the 2022 edition of its Award for Social Cohesion, the annual competition to acknowledge outstanding contributions to social cohesion across Europe.

The far-reaching consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic have demonstrated that social cohesion cannot be taken for granted. Supporting economy actors who place human solidarity at the heart of action is key to rebuilding more resilient economies and meeting international development goals by 2030 and beyond. 

“With this initiative, we want to highlight the important role of social economy organisations in reducing inequalities, strengthening social cohesion and promoting inclusive growth,” said CEB Governor Carlo Monticelli at the virtual opening event. “We seek to encourage different promoters of social cohesion at the grassroots level, acknowledging their impact, celebrating their success.”

The award will bestow a €25,000 prize to a project that addresses pressing social issues and makes a difference in the local community. The competition is open to small organisations and individuals over the age of 18 from the CEB’s 42 member countries. Their contribution to social cohesion will be assessed on impact, sustainability and innovation.

The deadline for receiving applications is 20 April, after which an expert panel will examine and score all the eligible entries. The most promising five shortlisted projects will be evaluated by an independent jury of five eminent members. The winner will be recognised at a ceremony in early July.

Last year, the competition attracted project nominations from 27 countries, demonstrating that the message of support for social cohesion resonates across Europe and that social economy and entrepreneurship are strong catalysts for social innovation.
